Commonwealth Games Update: Boost Expected for Lanarkshire Accommodation Providers says Commonwealth Bid Team
28th January 2008
This week (24th January 2008), representatives from the successful Commonwealth Games bid team attended Lanarkshire’s Accommodation Association meeting to highlight the opportunities the 2014 event will bring for accommodation providers in the area.
Derek Casey, interim Chief Executive of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014, advised that Lanarkshire as a whole, and accommodation providers in particular, will enjoy the benefits of the Games long before 2014 with competitors attending training camps in Scotland to acclimatise themselves in the months and years leading up to the event.
Lanarkshire also falls within the 50km radius that has been agreed for the provision of Games accommodation. Providers have been advised to look at their capacities and repeat business figures early to allow for effective planning.
Strathclyde Country Park in Motherwell will provide the picturesque setting for one of the Games’ most demanding events - the triathlon.
Dan McGrory, a spokesperson from Lanarkshire Tourism Marketing Partnership, said,
“As well as providing one of the key venues for the Games, Lanarkshire looks set to enjoy a significant economic boost in the years leading up to the 2014 event. The bid team’s presentation to the Accommodation Association has inspired our members and clearly demonstrates the commitment to maximising the positive impact of this opportunity not only for Glasgow but for Lanarkshire and the rest of Scotland as a whole.
“We hope that the Games will allow us to showcase to an international audience, the diversity, history, beauty and individuality of Lanarkshire as a tourism destination.”
